(the first) Studio Samuel Scholarship

Studio Samuel will fund one long-term scholarship for a locally selected vulnerable young woman who, without this opportunity, would not have access to a full-time education. This is not a monthly sponsorship program, but a lump sum to cover a multi-year scholarship for a girl to stay in school through the completion of a secondary level education. One scholarship will be awarded for the 2014 school year, with plans to add more as our program and support grow. 

Estimated cost: $1,500USD (a six year scholarship to keep a girl in school between the ages of 10-16)

Applicant Criteria: 
  • currently ranked in the top three of her class
  • nominated by her teacher
  • letter of support from her parent(s)
  • from a poor family unable to provide necessary school fees*
  • currently attending one of the local schools working with us in the Mekanisa area

*Government school is free. Costs incurred: books, uniforms, transportation, lunch, pencils and notebooks
Poverty is one of the main barriers to girls’ and women’s education. Socio-cultural factors such as social norms and traditional practices about the role and position of women in Ethiopian society, gender-based violence, early marriage and teenage pregnancy, are affecting girls’ and women’s access to and completion of education.
